With last night’s kickoff of his Summer Sixteen tour with Future, Drake
could have just performed his songs as we’ve come to know them, but
what fun would that be? Then he couldn’t add in new subliminal shots.
And that’s where this clip
of his “Summer Sixteen” performance in Austin comes in. In it, he
switches his lyrics from “All you boys in the new Toronto want to be me a
little,” to “All you boys doing fake ‘Controlla’ want to be me a
little.”
When “Summer Sixteen” came out back in January, there was already speculation that it was about Tory Lanez, who had been poking at Drake for some time — saying things like that the term “the 6” was “not cool” — and had dropped a mixtape called The New Toronto.
Still, the line swap seems even more pointed given Tory’s remix earlier this month of Aubrey’s “Controlla.”
Tory may not be the only one on the receiving end of the subliminal, though. There’s also Tyga,
a longtime Young Money labelmate of Drake’s, but also someone who’s had
an at times fraught relationship with him, sparked in public by
comments Tyga made, and carried on by Aubrey on “6PM in New York.”
Though Kanye reportedly then helped the two put their issues behind them,
it’s hard to not at least wonder if, “All you boys doing fake
‘Controlla’ want to be me a little,” was a line delivered with Tyga in
mind, too. After all, his “1 of 1,” released in June, drew quick
comparisons to the Views track.
