With DJ Khaled and Calvin Harris successfully transitioning from DJs to artists, many DJs and producers are attempting to follow their footsteps. In a recent live-stream, Waka Flocka Flame thrashed upcoming producers with similar aspirations simply because it's outside of their wheelhouse.
"Is it me or, goddamn, when a DJ or a producer get famous, they wanna drop an album," Flocka began. “N---a, you’re not a rapper... you’re not an artist. Stick to your fucking profession, man. Fuck!”
This year, DJ Khaled, Calvin Harris and Steve Aoki all released their albums as artists. Khaled's Grateful album spawned a No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 in "I'm the One" and his current record, "Wild Thoughts," is currently locked in at the No. 2 spot. Last week, London On Da Track announced his deal to RCAand dropped his first single "No Flag" featuring Nicki MinajOffset and 21 Savagefrom his upcoming album. His decision to veer off into the artist lane has only widened the pool of producers-turned artists.
